Teased about Moulding

When I was at school, the kids used to gather round me in the playground and say “Uuuh! Mouldy!” while pulling faces of disgust and fake horror. A popular song at the time started “John Brown’s body lies a-moulding in the grave”. I was often compared with mouldy bread and they would find stale sandwiches to give me which had gone mouldy. All Mouldings have probably suffered similar torments. Looking back at it now, it seems very funny but at the time it was very upsetting. It took a long time for me to see the funny side and to be able to give as well as I could take. It was a friend who, being rather large, everyone feared who solved the problem for me. He gave me the nickname of “Mow” (pronounced like “how”) and it stuck, so as everyone called me that, the mouldy bit all faded into the background.

How did you get along with the teasing?
